| The Japanese word Reiki translates as "Universal Life Energy". This universal life force can be channeled and focused by the trained practitioner to provide a source of healing power for the client. It is useful in almost any situation as it stimulates the integration of mind/body/spirit to enhance the natural healing mechanism. Reiki is also valuable as a tool for self-enlightenment. Persons seriously interested in seeking enlightenment and enhanced self-awareness may choose to learn more about this ancient and fascinating discipline. |

Today, Reiki is as diverse as those who follow its path. Its Universal nature is the underlying feature that retains the essence of Reiki through the variety of lineages, practices and teaching methods. The purity of the system you learn is a reflection of the integrity, training and understanding of the Master teacher you select.
| The practice of Reiki originated, according to tradition, around 3,000 B.C., in what we now call Tibet. Until the mid-1880s, Reiki was part of mankind's hidden history, surviving primarily by oral teaching in various monastic orders. Around 1870, a Japanese Christian theologian, Dr. Mikao Usui, began searching through ancient texts to find the formulas to activate and harness the energy he believed was the source for the miraculous healings of Jesus and Buddha. After many years of study, Usui went into seclusion on a mountain top to meditate and fast, hoping to have an experience that would unite his knowledge with the essence of the energy. On the 21st day he achieved this mystical fusion of enlightenment in an "initiation by light".
Dr. Usui began treating and healing others, but soon found that healing the body alone did not change people's unhealthy attitudes. He left his healing mission to teach and "attune" others to this powerful, Universal energy source. He developed 5 affirmations that capture the essence Reiki.
Just for today, do not worry. These 5 simple principles are still an outline for conscious living over a century later. Dr. Usui eventually passed his knowledge of the "attuning" process to Dr. Hayashi, who operated a Reiki clinic in Tokyo. Hayashi passed this knowledge along to others, including Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a dedicated former patient from Hawaii. By the time of her transition in 1980, Takata had initiated 22 students as full Reiki Masters, and the ancient knowledge began to spread throughout the world like the waters of the oceans. |
| One major difference between Reiki and many other healing systems is that Reiki energy comes through, not from, the practitioners, thus they are not drained or harmed by channeling it. This unique feature allows practitioners to use Reiki on themselves or to help others regardless of their own personal energy status. It is not filtered through the user's conscious or unconscious belief system, so remains pure and can find its way wherever and however it is needed. |
